Switch to dumbbells, however, and you will be able to actually push the ends of the dumbbells together as you bring the dumbbells up and down. This adds a new dimension to the exercise, allowing you to more specifically target the inner part of your chest muscles. Give it a try to see just how effective this slight adaptation is. 

A final benefit of using dumbbells over a barbell is that it allows you to recruit a number of stabilizer muscles in order to improve your functional strength. Returning to the bench press, we find that, in the top extended arm position, the upper body has to work to balance the dumbbell and keep them in place.
